Symetron™ FlexMod
AC Variable Frequency
Drive Industrial Controller
Symetron-VFD™
Advanced Control Logic
Symetron-VFD™ technology includes a
set of proprietary advanced control
algorithms that improve the
efficiency of motors being driven by
variable speed drives commonly used
for heating ventilation and air
conditioning (HVAC) and other
applications that use pumps and
fans. The Symetron™ enhanced
variable frequency drive (VFD) shown
here, was tested against an
industry-leading HVAC Variable
Frequency Drive (VFD) and
demonstrated significant improvement
in efficiency in much of the range
below rated load, an area where many
high efficiency HVAC systems operate
up to 50% of the time.
In
dynamometer testing, the Symetron™
enhanced VFD controller demonstrated
an improvement of up to 15% in
system efficiency at reduced loads
over an industry-leading VFD. In
this test a Symetron™ enhanced VFD
was paired with a leading 20 hp
industrial motor most commonly used
in industrial HVAC systems.

Performance Data
The graph shows an
efficiency comparison when a leading
20 Hp motor was driven at variable
speeds for centrifugal pump and fan
loads with a Symetron™ enhanced VFD.
It demonstrated greatest benefits at
lower RRM. At reduced fan speeds the
Symetron™ enhanced VFD showed up to
a 15% points improvement in
efficiency over a leading variable
frequency drive. Even more
improvement should be realized when
a Symetron™ enhanced controller is
coupled with a Symetron™ enhanced
motor design.
Key Observation
Sixty percent all electric power in
the US is used by electric motors.
Some of the largest industrial users
are pumps and fans used in heating
ventilation and air conditioning
(HVAC). To improve efficiency of
HVAC systems, Variable Frequency
Drives or VFDs are used to optimize
speed and efficiency. By reducing
fan speed by just 30%, a 50%
reduction in energy can be achieved.
Raser’s advanced VFD shows the most
improvement at lower fan speeds
where VFD drives operate about half
of the time.
Benefits
-

improvement when combined with
Symetron™ motor design
Note: It is commonly known that
reducing fan speed with VFD can
save up to 50% more energy
